Title: Immortal Consequences
Author: I. V. Marie
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
The Book Haven Book Club Rating: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5)
Immortal Consequences is a dark, atmospheric YA fantasy that explores what happens when immortality is no longer a gift but a punishment. Set in a lush, perilous world shaped by fate and magic, the story follows characters who are forced to confront the price of eternal life and the moral weight of the choices that bind them. The novel blends haunting imagery, emotional stakes, and high-concept fantasy with a sense that some endings are far worse than death.
Highlights and Insights
1: Atmosphere: The writing creates a moody, almost gothic tone that feels immersive from the first page. The world feels alive, ancient, and quietly menacing.
2: Themes: Immortality, consequence, sacrifice, and fate are woven thoughtfully into the story rather than feeling like surface-level concepts.
3: Emotional Weight: The book doesn’t shy away from grief, regret, and longing, giving the story a surprising emotional depth for a YA fantasy.
4: Concept: The idea of immortality as a curse rather than a reward is handled in a fresh, compelling way.
Immortal Consequences is definitely meant for a YA audience, as there is not much spice or action in this story. However, that does not mean that it was not a good book. The story takes place at Blackwood Academy, a school that exists in neither life nor death, but in Purgatory.
Every ten years, one prestigious student is chosen to ascend into the Academy’s leadership and retain their soul for eternity. That is, until a new student appears at Blackwood and unbalances the ether. The “easy” decade student selection turns into a challenge between a chosen group of students. Since only one student is chosen to ascend every ten years, the remaining students must wait another decade if they are not selected. The longer they wait, the more their soul and human abilities fade away.
The book glosses over each student’s past life and how they ended up at Blackwood Academy. The reasons for their death lean towards dark and gothic rather than a simple accident with fate. Since each death is not explained outside of a quick flashback for a subtle memory, the scenes are quick and brutal. I am hoping they expand on this more in the next book.
The story dragged most of the time, and it could be hard to want to finish. I recommend sticking it out as it really picks up at the end. There is a mix of romance, regret, envy, and egocentric behaviors as students compete for their ascension. The ending will take you on a roller coaster of twists and turns that you may not see coming.
Immortal Consequences is a haunting, thoughtful fantasy that lingers long after the final page. While it may move at a slower pace in places, its rich atmosphere and thematic depth make it a rewarding read for those who appreciate introspective, character-driven fantasy.
