Review by: Sierra Smith
The very first book we voted on for our first book club read was The Pumpkin Spice Cafe. It seemed like the best choice since some of the members were new readers, and we wanted to test the waters of what this club could become. I am so glad we started here! Being glad we started with this book does not mean that it deserves 5 stars. It simply did the job of being an easy read, and it was not intimidating for new readers.
Highlights and Insights:
- Cafe coffee
- A taste of a mystery
- Romantic Plot
- Metaphotical realism
The Pumpkin Spice Cafe is about as Hallmark as it gets. It is an easy read with low expectations. You can probably guess the ending before you’ve even finished the book description on the sleeve. I won’t be too harsh on this book as it did the job it was supposed to do: stay simple, keep readers engaged, and welcome people to a cozy read.
The main character, Jeanie, has inherited her aunt’s beloved Pumpkin Spice Cafe. Her aunt Jeanie also left town and is not available to teach her the ropes of the town’s favorite (and only) cafe. Jeanie must face the trials and tribulations of adjusting to small-town life, learning how to manage a cafe after working as an Executive Assistant for many years, and solving the mystery of who is trying to sabotage her newly established reputation.
Laurie Gilmore keeps this book extraordinarily simple while also keeping the reader engaged. She uses metaphorical realism often to foreshadow the story being told. You will receive a bite of all areas you are looking for: romance, enemies to lovers, gossip, mystery & suspense, etc.
This is a perfect book to throw on some comfy clothes, snuggle up under a blanket, and sip on a latte with. There will be some people who love this book or simply hate it. If you enjoy Hallmark movies, then you will enjoy this book. If Hallmark is not your cup of coffee, then I recommend skipping this one. I, for one, believe this is the perfect palette cleanser book if you are a fantasy reader like me!
